De la ville aux champs : La transformation d'Aghmat (Maroc) entre les XIVème et XVIème siècles

Once a flourishing medieval town, Aghmat was abandoned because of the political and economic crisis in 14th‑century Morocco. Later on, during the 16th century, the area once again became dynamic and achieved its agricultural reconversion with a very different pattern, including settlement scattering and the arrival of new protagonists (a brotherhood of ascetic potters, immigrants fleeing Portuguese incursions). Meanwhile, a confused period invites to question the transition between two socio-economic systems. On the scale of Morocco too, this crisis period of the 15th century between the fall of the Marinids and the coming of the Saadians is not very well known. Marked by the breakdown of the central power, the degradation of the towns and economic and military difficulties, it is not well documented. The extensive excavations of the Aghmat medieval centre buildings in their context of abandonment, along with scarce written sources, allow us to approach it at a local level. Through this reconversion of a town, the authors intend to show the transition as the intermediate moment when multiple factors and possibilities are combined.
Aghmat fut une ville médiévale florissante, mais la crise politico-économique du Maroc au XIVe siècle entraina son abandon. Plus tard, au XVIe siècle, c’est dans un tout autre schéma que la localité se redynamisa et acheva sa reconversion agricole, entre un éclatement de l’habitat et l’arrivée de nouvelles populations (une confrérie d’ascètes potiers et des immigrés fuyant les incursions portugaises). Entre-temps, une période floue pose la question de la transition entre deux systèmes socio-économiques. À l’échelle du Maroc, entre la chute des Mérinides et l’arrivée des Saadiens, cette période de crise du XVe siècle est de manière générale mal connue. Marquée par l’éclatement du pouvoir central, une détérioration des villes et des difficultés économiques et militaires, elle est mal documentée par les textes. La fouille extensive des édifices du centre-ville médiéval d’Aghmat et de leurs niveaux d’abandon, confrontée aux rares sources écrites, permet de l’approcher localement. Avec la reconversion d’une ville, les auteurs entendent montrer la transition comme ce moment intermédiaire où de multiples facteurs et possibilités se croisent.
