This paper aims to show how three nineteenth century Canadian women writers, emphasizing the role given to Native women and Mixed-race people. With her stories and Indian characters, Johnson wrote back to the dominant culture, proposing her own versions of First Nations Canadian heroines and of the new nation. Echoes, rather than oppositions, will be traced between the writings of these three women.
