Immortalized by Fouquet’s famous miniature, the trial against the duke of Alençon in 1458 was one of the most important events in the reign of Charles VII, marking a milestone in the strengthening of his royal authority. In this context, the trial has been studied frequently in the past. But what historians have dealt with was mostly the way in which the trial unfolded and its legal and political meaning, while the accounts offered by contemporary chroniclers have received little attention. This article analyzes how these chroniclers depicted the trial against the duke in order to explore how historiography can mediate judicial facts.

Immortalisé par Fouquet, le procès du duc d’Alençon, en 1458, constitue un des grands moments de l’histoire politique du règne de Charles VII et une étape importante de l’affirmation de la majesté royale. À ces titres, il a évidemment déjà beaucoup été étudié. Mais si son déroulement et sa signification ont retenu l’attention, on s’est en revanche peu spécifiquement attardé sur sa relation par les chroniqueurs du temps. La présente étude se propose donc d’examiner la transposition historiographique du procès intenté au duc pour voir comment l’historiographie a « médiatisé le fait judiciaire ».
