Les Romains et la Grèce égéenne du Ier s. av. J.-C. au Ier s. apr. J.-C. : un monde en transition

We owe to Horace the famous verse on conquered Greece (Graecia capta) “which took captive her savage conqueror and brought arts into rustic Latium”. Many centuries later, in 1993, it was adopted also as a title by Susan Alcock for her book on the Landscapes of Roman Greece, one of the few works devoted entirely to the Greek mainland and islands in Roman times. For twenty years, researches in this field have changed our perspective in many ways, the focus now being on local responses by the Greeks to Roman presence, both in their daily lives and in the images that they had of Rome. The question is here addressed in three parts dedicated to the province of Achaia to: territories (destruction, territorial remodelling, colonies and cities), institutional forms (the formation of the province, provincial administration, confederations) and civic societies (Italians and elite Greeks, statuary presence and imperial cult).
On doit à Horace le célèbre vers sur la Grèce captive (Graecia capta) « qui fit prisonnier son sauvage vainqueur et apporta les arts dans le rustique Latium ». Bien des siècles après, en 1993, c’est également le titre adopté par Susan Alcock pour son livre sur les Landscapes of Roman Greece, l’un des rares ouvrages entièrement consacrés à la Grèce continentale et insulaire à l’époque romaine. Depuis vingt ans, les travaux sur ce domaine ont changé de perspective à plusieurs égards, l’accent étant mis désormais sur les réponses apportées localement par les Grecs à la présence romaine, à la fois dans le quotidien de leur existence et dans les représentations qu’ils avaient de Rome. Telle est ici la problématique adoptée pour une présentation en trois parties consacrées, pour la province d’Achaïe, aux territoires (destructions, remodelages territoriaux, colonies et cités), aux formes institutionnelles (formation de la province, administration provinciale, confédérations) et aux sociétés civiques (Italiens et élites grecques, présence statuaire et culte impérial).
