Relation à l'espace et provocation au désir dans l'œuvre de Julien Gracq

Abstract : The images of wastes, of border areas, of no man’s lands, of empty lots or « urban clearings » the reader encounters in Julien Gracq’s works testify to a strong predilection for places whose hybrid status makes hard to define precisely. Acting as a springboard for imagination, these places enable the narrator to superpose freely imaginary sceneries to the real ones, which eventually leads to an adventurous conception of time, one that is constantly on the verge of revelation or transgression. All this enhances the great dramatizing potential of such an apprehension of space in terms of narrative plot. On the other hand, if desire is triggered off by space, its perenniality is also guaranteed by the distance maintained between subject and object. We may thus consider the gracquian relationship to space as incarnating the dynamics of libidinal workings.
