France and information technology : where are we at ? A gendered view on the declining interest in IT

Résumé

Our research starting point is the persistent masculine image of technology, which affects the choice of studies. Our research objective is to examine how male and female students cope with this male image as they evolve in their schools. We have conducted this research in France in an engineering school and a management school both oriented towards ICT. This research is based on 40 student interviews and accounts at different stages in their Master's program of study. Our basic questioning was: What attitude do you have towards technology?
