Gendering the history of art criticism in France, 1750-1850

Résumé

The historiography of 18th- and 19th-century French art criticism has been recently enriched by several studies on art critics, among them a few important ones focusing on women critics. Gendering this history, nevertheless, means that it is necessary to go beyond individuals and broaden the perspective by expanding the chronology and taking into account the social structures and the historical conditions in which art critiques were produced. This paper aims to propose such an overview of art criticism in a gender perspective, from the Age of Enlightenment (and the birth of art criticism as a specific literary genre) to the aftermath of the Romantic Battle, when most of the critics aren’t connoisseurs and artists anymore, but professional journalists and writers. I will then focus, in this paper, on the crucial connexion between this practical evolution of the critics’ general profile and a major shift, that occurred during the same period, in the collective perception of art and sensitivity, the latter going from a universal quality to a feminine trait, inducing a radical change in the critics’ social and discursive situation towards both the public and the artists.
