This article looks at the contemporary Arab TV drama ‘Umar, co-produced by the Saudi TV channel MBC and Qatar’s Qatar TV, and broadcast in 2012. It aims to understand how the series depicts the origins of Islam and ideal caliphate power. It firstly focuses on the series’ narrative, before moving on to examine the challenge of the representation of the Prophet and the hierarchy of the roles of the companions. It concludes by studying the career of ‘Umar.
Cet article porte sur la série ‘Umar, une co-production des chaînes saoudienne MBC et qatarie Qatar TV, diffusée en 2012. Cette étude vise à comprendre la manière dont la série met en scène les origines de l’islam et du pouvoir califal idéal. Dans un premier temps, l’article se penche sur la trame narrative de la série, puis aborde le défi de la représentation du Prophète et la hiérarchisation des rôles des Compagnons. Il se clôt sur une étude du parcours de ‘Umar.
