« Nos ancêtres, les Gaulois » ? Les « racines gauloises » et leurs usages politiques dans la France médiévale

Abstract : The « Roman aux Roys » is the first global historical narrative dedicated to the past of France. It was issued in medieval times, in the second half of the 13th century. This chronicle was an order placed by Saint Louis to the monk of Saint-Denis Primat and the latter’s work was followed up until 1461 until it was printed in Paris in 1477. However the ancestral Gaul character of the “Nation France” is never mentioned in it. It is this very absence that first appears astonishing which we will attempt to explain and then we will examine the first signs of the Gauls in the national mythography.
