I propose here, not to probe the vast question of scandal in Sartre, but to wonder about a favorite method of his theater as it emerges from his conception of freedom. Indeed, his plays were a great success while giving rise to real scandals. The theater would seem to be the ideal place to describe “the plurality of consciousnesses”. My approach is based on an observation: the scandal pushes us to question the notion of the Other and to rethink that of community. I will begin by considering what is disturbing in Sartre, I will then focus on the privileged links between theater and scandal and conclude with the meaning of the latter. Far from testifying to a desire for destruction, pure provocation or the abolition of communication, the scandal manifests the quest for a community, a way out of the blindness which fuels hatred of others. We move from a state of indifference to a state of indignation, in connection with the notion of gift: “generous indignation is an oath to change”.

            <abstract xml:lang="fr">
