This article follows the members of the French National Committee For Digital Ethics as they carefully observe the wild ride of a trolley thrown at full speed onto the shifting rails of a changing world. Some of them apply the brake, others hit the gas – and then, together, take a step sideways – trying to foresee how the emergence of driverless vehicles might transform the world, to anticipate how the journey will be told, to recount why these machines came into existence. If the reader hasn’t gone overboard already, he or she will eventually wonder, a little breathlessly, which hand is pulling the stick and whose decision it should be.
