Proper names linguistics
used for lexicographical treatement of French deonomastics
These deonomastics arise, by translation, from persons’ or mythological creatures’ proper nouns (harpie, mécène).
Within the framework of TLF-Etym project, the drafting of etymological notes is carried out in two steps ; establishing the original etymon is often done without any problem, but rebuilding the history of the word is a bit more delicate. That point is quite crucial when the etymon is latin, because in that case, the context is often very short.
Some studies about the metaphoric use of proper names in contemporary discourse evidence some clues, syntactical or from text and context. If we apply those clues to latin, and transpose them to antic antonomasias, we can obtain some proofs to decide whether the proper name had been lexicalised at that time or not.
We finally use those clues to treat one instance, as an exemple, of a deonomastic with a classical etymon, mégère ; we look back to the lexicographic data as well as to the evidence in their context, and we confront that data to the recent linguistic analysis ; we are able, then, to propose a new etymological note for the TLF(i).
