The Espérandieu archives, kept at the Palais du Roure, in Avignon, contains the own scholar's library and his unedited manuscripts. In the context of the history of archeology, an inventory of archaeological letters was conducted to study its scientific networks in France and abroad, with scholarly Associations and Universities, as well as its relationship with Ministries of Education and War. Letters show development of its epigraphic network since 1883.Then, his regional publications secure him legitimacy among scholars as well as his succeeding to Allmer’s Revue épigraphique du Midi de la France and his participation to the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum. Become expert of the Gallo- Roman world, supported by S. Reinach, R. Cagnat, A. Héron Villefosse and C. Jullian, he was given the responsibility of the Recueil des bas-reliefs de la Gaule in 1903. In the Correspondence, the process of reliefs search through its network, the publishing of volumes, the receipt by the scientific world, and the critical response to it, are analyzed. Finally, the site of Alésia, he runs from 1906, emerging issues of archaeological fieldwork. This site generates picturings of fantasized Gaul, both for the protohistoric period and Gallo-Roman period and crystallizes oppositions. Finally, the correspondence makes it clear how violent these oppositions may have been in terms of excavation methods and interpretation of findings.
