Translating, deleting, rewriting: on a few cases of translations in the "Série Noire" series
The creation of the famous Série noire, from the mid-1940s onwards, contributed to the introduction of the American noir novel in France. The translations are very free and allow for cuts, giving the novels the appearance of a lack of interest in psychology. These cuts are directly linked to Marcel Duhamel’s editorial strategy, and one may wonder to what extent that strategy helped fashion, for French readers and critics, the image of American behaviorist writing, thus influencing French-style behaviorist writing.
