Marcher au chaudron. Genèse de l'ordalie dans l'Empire romain (IIe-IVe siècles)

Abstract : Translation is a complex process. When we mention trial by cauldron by the name of ordeal, we already assess its Germanic roots. Because Germanic is still often associated to Barbaric, ritual is classified as an irrational proof. The question can be renewed by the study of defixiones. For the ancient Celtic populations, cauldron was the tool of Truth and for this reason, as early as the Second Century, it had judicial applications in Roman Britain. An alternative justice allowed trials in temples by which the justice of Gods was asked. for The cauldron allowed God’s verdict to be revealed. From temples, ritual switched to armies. The cauldron took place in the procedure used for mixed trials, cases between provincials and barbarian soldiers. But in the Late Empire, the cauldron became a test, a sort of torture by which the accusation was investigated. In addition, it is thought that the Genesis of the ordeal of cauldron began in the Empire. Around the idea of Truth, Roman tradition and Barbarian custom was combined.
