All the World’s a Screen: Transcoding in Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet
Résumé
No screen adaptation of Hamlet can expect simply to “dissolve the play into film” in the words of Anthony Davies unless it merely retains the story line as Zeffirelli did in his Hamlet without the play. Kenneth Branagh's 1996 adaptation is a reflection on the passage from page to stage and eventually to screen, and a constant dialogue between their respective conventions.
