Erasing the architectural and built identity of the Marais Vernier : a chronicle of the suburban dream as an expression of consumer society
L'effacement de l'identité architecturale et bâtie du Marais Vernier : une chronique du rêve pavillonnaire comme expression de la société de consommation
Résumé
At the heart of an ancient meander of the Seine, the Marais Vernier micro-region (France - Normandy) is renowned for its vast wetlands, an ecological sanctuary protected by multiple French and European schemes. It is also an exceptional area in terms of architecture and buildings, the fruit of local determinisms that have dictated the nature and form of the habitat and land. While the “chaumière”, a thatched, half-timbered house, is the land's defining feature, its place in the landscape is gradually disappearing under the weight of the urbanization movement initiated in the early 1960s and the opening up of the area. Since then, in a random arrangement and denial of the existing, singularity and richness, the various forms of built-up areas that have marked each new phase of individual construction in France since the post-war period have been sedimented. The result has been a long process of erasing built, land, and architectural identity, driven by the realization of the suburban dream and the myth of the single-family home as the material manifestation of consumer society.
Au cœur d’un ancien méandre de la Seine, la microrégion du Marais Vernier (France - Normandie) est reconnue pour sa vaste zone humide, sanctuaire écologique préservé par de multiples dispositifs français et européens. Elle est aussi un territoire d’exception sur le plan architectural et bâti, fruit de déterminismes locaux qui ont dicté la nature et la forme de l’habitat et celle du foncier. Si la « chaumière », maison à pans de bois couverte de chaume, constitue l’élément identitaire de ce territoire, sa place dans le paysage progressivement s’efface sous le poids d’un mouvement d’urbanisation initié au début des années 1960 et le désenclavement du territoire. S’y sédimentent depuis, dans un agencement aléatoire et dans le déni de l’existant, de sa singularité et de sa richesse les différentes formes de bâtis qui ont marqué en France chaque nouveau temps de la construction individuelle depuis l’après-guerre. Ainsi s’exprime un processus long d’effacement d’une identité bâtie, foncière et architecturale porté par la concrétisation du rêve pavillonnaire et le mythe de la maison individuelle posés en manifestations matérielles de la société de consommation.
