We have conducted a detailed study of both tools and ornaments in bone, antler, tooth and shell found in the collective graves of the Paris Basin from the end of the fourth to the end of the third millennium BC. All the typological, technical, functional and spatial aspects were considered in order to determine what kind of artefacts exists and what their function was in funerary practices. This analysis shows that not all the finds known for this period were deposited in collective graves but rather that the grave goods were selected. Following the study of the traces on ornaments and tools, we can state that, for themost part, they were not new when deposited. The spatial distribution of finds in tombs provides evidence of some deposit types which present a chronological evolution. Although the collective function of deposits found is important at the end of the fourth millennium BC, it also exists in parallel with the development of individual deposits during the third millennium BC. This is the reason why all the finds in matter of animal bones are included in a “funerary codification” of practices, which can have, at the same time, different forms and significance.
