Despite being one of the most fundamental tools in ethnography, journals (in the “diaristic” sense of the term) are seldom cited in academic texts and, with very few exceptions, never published as such. Though social-science handbooks allude to it, the journal has yet never been subject to the scrutiny of theoretical works that would take aim at describing it as a textual tool, at theorizing it as an epistemological means, and at methodically operating on it. As such, it remains a blind spot in the disciplines built onto ethnographic endeavors.
To rectify this state of affairs, the present work will suggest prototypical methods in exploiting a particular diaristic material. To do so, this PhD dissertation chooses to build around a journal that is described, dissected, and exploited as the basis of an epistemological and methodological reflection working to prepare the ground for a diaristic anthropology. In the course of this effort, the journal offers itself as an alternative to the narrative, which is standing as a pervasive formula in the social sciences and can be defined as a series of teleologically-designed, plot-based textual devices. In so doing, the move towards a diaristic anthropology also becomes an attempt, on an epistemological level, to appraise critically the various disciplines emanating from ethnography.
The journal used here to this end stands at the very margin of academic writing, for it was written by the author of this dissertation without any research intention. He was incited in this process during an 18-month residence in L***, a non-profit social-work initiative located in France, run by a charity organization, and consisting of several apartments shared among people coping with severe poverty (usually witnessed by a past period of homelessness), together with volunteers. The author, engaged in this community life-setting, thus journals his everyday experience. He is subsequently led to consider the power of distortion that lies in such well-received textual practices as narratives of all sorts.
Quoiqu’il soit l’un des outils fondamentaux de l’ethnographie, le journal (au sens « diaristique » du terme) est aussi très rarement cité dans les textes universitaires et, à quelques rares exceptions près, jamais publié pour lui-même. S’il peut parfois être évoqué dans les ouvrages de méthode des sciences sociales, il n’a pas encore fait l’objet de travaux théoriques qui viseraient à le décrire comme outil textuel, à le théoriser comme ressource épistémologique, et à cadrer son usage avec une visée d’exploitation méthodique. Il constitue à ce titre un angle mort dans la pratique des disciplines appuyées sur la démarche ethnographique.
Pour tenter de remédier à cette situation, il s’agit de proposer dans ce travail des méthodes expérimentales d’exploitation d’un matériau diaristique. Pour ce faire, cette thèse fait le choix de partir d’un journal qu’elle décrit, dissèque, et exploite comme le fondement d’une réflexion épistémologico-méthodologique qui se veut un jalon dans la constitution d’une anthropologie diaristique. Tout au long de cette réflexion, le journal est posé comme une alternative au récit, format omniprésent dans les sciences sociales et défini comme un dispositif textuel téléologique fondé sur le mécanisme de l’intrigue. Ce faisant, l’ambition d’une anthropologie diaristique devient aussi la tentative d’une critique épistémologique des disciplines fondées sur la démarche ethnographique.
Le journal choisi pour fonder cette démarche se tient très à la marge de l’écriture universitaire, dans la mesure où il a été rédigé en dehors de tout cadre de recherche. Il a été suscité par un séjour effectué par l’auteur de la thèse durant dix-huit mois à L***, dispositif associatif de travail social situé en France et qui est constitué par un système de colocations où cohabitent simultanément des personnes ayant connu la grande précarité (le plus souvent sous la forme de situations de vie à la rue) et des bénévoles. L’auteur, pris dans cette situation de vie collective, saisit ainsi un journal qui l’amène à s’interroger par contraste sur la puissance déformante de ces pratiques textuelles communes en sciences sociales que sont les récits de tous ordres.
